A spellcaster can take craft wondrous item and get most of his gear at half price, provided he can meet the items' other prerequisites, but the tradeoff is the xp cost of crafting magic items so he may start out lower level. For example, a fighter can put max ranks in craft: armorsmithing and provided he can take ten on the craft checks to always succeed, he can make his own mithral full plate for only 1/3 of the normal cost. They should have to spend at least half of this on actual items, to prevent players from just starting play with that much cash in hopes of immediately purchasing a hugely expensive item that they should not have been able to begin play with.Ĭharacters can craft their own items to obtain them at a reduced cost.
They shouldn't be able to get any single item worth more than half that starting wealth, but otherwise there shouldn't be a limit to what they can put on their character sheet, so long as the total value doesn't exceed their budget. DMG page 135, Character Wealth By Level should give them a fair budget for magic items and other equipment based on what level they're starting out at.
